Vaginal Infection. Always STI?
Vaginal infections, also known as vaginitis, are a common problem that can cause discomfort, discharge, and other symptoms. There are several types of vaginal infections, including bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance of the normal bacteria that live in the vagina. This can lead to discharge, itching, and a fishy odor. Bacterial vaginosis is not an STI, but it can increase the risk of getting an STI. It is treated with antibiotics. Several factors can make increase the number of bacteria, including:
-Sex. Semen impacts the pH level in the vagina, which can contribute to a higher rate of bacteria growth.
-Douching. Douching with vinegar or antiseptics causes inflammation and can increase the risk of infections. This also can eliminate some good bacteria.
-Diet change. Anything that affects the gastrointestinal tract or internal body system can affect the normal balance of bacteria. Also, a poor diet can affect the ability of the body to return to a normal state.
-Nylon underwear/tight yoga pants. Wearing nylon underwear or tight yoga pants can block air movement in the vaginal area, which can cause increased bacteria growth.-
Heavily perfumed/antibacterial soaps. Using soap with a lot of scents or an antibacterial agent spurs bacteria growth.
-Sweating. When you work out, your clothes get wet, which encourages bacteria growth.
Yeast infections, also known as candidiasis, are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida. Symptoms include itching, burning, and discharge. Yeast infections can be treated with antifungal medications, which can be applied topically or taken orally.
STIs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis, are caused by bacteria or parasites and are transmitted through sexual contact. Symptoms of STIs may include discharge, itching, and burning, but some people may not have any symptoms at all. STIs can be treated with antibiotics, but it is important to tell all sexual partners so they can also be treated to prevent re-infection.
Preventing vaginal infections involves practicing safe sex by using condoms, avoiding douching, and keeping the vagina clean by washing with mild soap and water. It is also important to see a healthcare provider for regular check-ups and to get tested for STIs.
In conclusion, vaginal infections are a common problem that can cause discomfort and other symptoms. There are several types of vaginal infections, including bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and STIs, and they can be treated with various medications. It is important to practice safe sex and to see a healthcare provider regularly to prevent and treat vaginal infections.
